Roadworthy modifications???

Post by free_styler1 on 26/1/2009, 1:59 am

Hi all

Looking at doing some extensive shaving of the engine bay...

What modifications can be done in there that still allows me too register her as a daily?

Looking at removing heater box & fan, wiper motor & well....
Looking for that clean custom flat/ drag car flat engine bay look..
Other dudes reckon I'm gunna need a demister fan (heated i don't know)
and prob move the wiper motor, maybe replace with a jag one.... a jap motor???

Has anybody come accross this before, or is it advisable to do these modifications after it's registered?
Which would be a royal pain in the arse to do at a later date, as i'm down to a bare shell. Which makes more sense to modify & paint at this stage...

Cheers in advance

Hi Freestyler1
I read this post on the old holden site and have been thinking about it.
I dont know if it would be possible but, would it fit if you turned the linkages around to make the passenger side have 2 arms from it and put the motor near the passengers side air vent??

Hi Freestyler,
Im no expert when it coems to what is definatley allowed, i suggest you get a copy of mods allowed for rego from relevant authority. You may even need an engineers certificate??
That being said, you can remove heater demister box and relace with smooth firewall, Yes you will need a demister, and wipers. Depending on your way of thinking mini rope and pull wipers would be the go as you could sit the mnear the glove box.
Being a rodder if seen many a smooth fire wall registered flat sheet metal being added. Look at some of the top cars at the summernats, and even over the weekend at the hot rod show. Id talk to relevant engineeer/vicroads RTA who ever it is that pass rego in your state. Remember that engineers cost about $500 a visit. Demisters that hide away can be bought from a good speed shop such as hot rod hardware, rocket and possibly even rares/autobarn. get online for rocket.
I say go for it it will look great.

Dont quote me, but i'm sure there is a underdash heater/fan unit that goes in after a modification like the one you are talking about, I have read it here or on oldholden.com, not sure. Question

as far as i know you have to have working wipers, and with holden i think it is pre hq you will not need a heater or demister. As it was a factory option as they had quarter windows.
if you are shaving the door handles, you will need a button on the out side of the car to open each door. but if you get on the rta site they should tell you about the laws on your car depending on your year model or call around to the rta inspection station and ask if you can speak with an inspector.I would not even worry about talking to anyone else at the rta as i found they only no little bits on modifications.
also in nsw if you car is a 1969, and you have a 2000 model engine you will have to comply with the epa laws on that engine.
hope this will help you in some way good luck with gettin info

Hi Allan, Check out some Hot Rod mags for ideas. There are a few ads for electric heater/demisters.

Sounds like you are making some progress with your ride. I need to pull my finger out.....

Cheers
